RL-31 Slip – Information About a Leased Dwelling

If you have reported rental income (or loss) on your 2014 Quebec tax return, you should probably have already received a letter from Revenue Quebec asking you to prepare the RL-31 Slip. If not, you can refer to the Revenue Quebec website where you can find all the information you need.

In the paragraphs below, you can find the most basic information regarding RL-31:

Who to prepare the slip: Any person or business that is the owner of a residential complex with one or more leased dwellings.

Who will receive the slip: Revenue Quebec and the tenants and subtenants of the dwelling on December 31, 2015;

When to file the slip: by February 29, 2016

What the slip is for: The slip will serve to report information about the leased dwelling, the number of tenants and information about the tenants. The tenants and subtenants can claim the solidarity tax credit in their income tax return.

How to prepare: The rental property owners will be able to use either of the following methods or contact Revenue Quebec.

  • the Prepare the RL-31 Slip online service, with its simple authentication procedure;
  • software authorized by Revenu Québec to generate RL-31 slips.
To view filed RL-31 slips and file new RL-31 slips, as an individual you must provide the following personal information:

  • your social insurance number
  • your date of birth
  • the notice number shown on any notice of assessment issued to you in the last two taxation years

Where to find help: For complete information on filing RL-31 slips, see the Guide to Filing the RL-31 Slip: Information About a Leased Dwelling(RL-31.G-V).

If you are a tenant or subtenant and have not received your RL-31, it does not hurt to remind your landlord. It’s a very important piece of document that you will need to file your tax returns and get whatever benefits you are entitled to. As it’s the first time ever a landlord has to do this, it could easily fall into a crack on the busy agenda of someone who is probably scrambling to assemble his/her own taxes.
